Widows and Children’s Fund

The current SBA Widows and Children’s Fund was established in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Among the law enforcement personnel killed in that horrific incident were active NYPD Sgts. John Coughlin, Michael Curtin, Rodney Gillis and Timothy Roy.

While the Fund initially provided services to the families of SBA members who passed away during the performance of their duties, or for reasons associated with their official duties, it now provides SBA COBRA benefits to the widows and children of active members and to the eligible widows and children of Lifetime members who passed away from causes not associated with their police duties.

The Fund also provides or offers assistance for social events, an annual holiday party where children are presented with gifts, and various events done in commemoration of a fallen member.

The program is also very active in contacting elected officials, as well as the media and parole board to keep those responsible for the killing of police officers in prison for their maximum sentences.

In addition, it is a steadfast supporter of the Metro New York chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), a non-profit organization that provides resources and assists in the rebuilding of lives of surviving family members of police officers who lost their lives in the performance of their duties.

Funds for the Widows and Children’s Fund are raised through the extremely popular Car Raffle, as well as private and corporate donations and various social events that are held throughout the year.

The Widows and Children’s Fund is a 501(c)3 organization. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
