Exceptional Merit
Awarded for an act of bravery intelligently performed involving personal risk to life.
Commendation or Commendation – Integrity
Awarded for grave personal injury in the line of duty or a highly credible unusual police accomplishment.
Commendation – Community Service
Awarded for an act which demonstrates devotion to community service or an idea implemented that improves conditions within the community.
Meritorious Police Duty (MPD)
Awarded for an act of intelligent and valuable police service demonstrating special faithfulness or perseverance or highly credible acts of police service over a period of time.
Excellent Police Duty (EPD)
Awarded for an intelligent act materially contributing to a valuable accomplishment or submission of a device or method adopted to increase efficiency in an administrative or tactical procedure.
Shoulder Patch
The symbol in the center of the Shoulder Patch is Fidelis Ad Mortem, Translated from Latin = Faithful Until Death. The patch was presented by a grateful citizenry in 1872 after years of civil unrest.

Service Stripe/Hash Mark
Each service stripe or hash mark, which is worn on the right sleeve, represents 5 years of dutiful service and reflect the paramilitary structure of the NYPD.
